A fun fact about Erasmus: he owned a car! A car that had been taking up space in his mother's driveway since he went off to college, and even though it wasn't like he needed it on the island, she would like it gone, please. So yesterday he and his friends had portaled to his momma's house, been fussed over appropriately, and spent the night and been fed breakfast this morning before they had promptly headed out.

In the wrong direction, because New Orleans was right there and Erasmus knew his duties as Local Guide. They had like four more days after this to drive back to Maryland. It would be fine.

Now they were standing in the middle of the French Quarter as Erasmus tried really hard not to think about how much he was paying for the privilege of parking his car, and he asked, "Okay, what do we want to do? Bourbon Street is a hellhole." He was just getting that out there first thing.

"They better have samples," Riri muttered, hooking her arm around his to drag him into the air conditioning. It was already hot and it was only the start of May. Why was it already hot?

Good thing every shop in the Quarter had refrigerator-level air conditioning! But also, this wasn't hot. This was almost cool, Riri. "They have samples! Oh, I wanna try the bananas foster ones." They tasted like chemicals, but also sugar, so.

"Can't you just get that normal here?"

"Sure, but you have to go to, like, a nice restaurant," he said. "Or a brunch place, some of them do like bananas foster pancakes or french toast or whatever." Fuck, that sounded really good.

"So, we're doin' that, right?"

"Obviously. We just have to find one, is all." In the maze of street construction.

"I think we have to turn here?" Riri said, looking at the blocked off street and the fencing keeping them from crossing anytime soon.

"I'm sure we'll find our way out eventually," Erasmus said, possibly with too much optimism.

Maybe the construction maze would spit them out in front of one of the many brunch spots!

"Does it have to be so high?"

"What are they hiding in there?" Erasmus, also not blessed with height, wondered.

From the sounds, or lack thereof, they were hiding the fact that they weren't actually working on fixing this mess already.

"Maybe they're actually filming back there."

No, no. That'd be in a more scenic area. On the edges of the Quarter.

"There's a show I really like that films here!" Erasmus lit up. "But I can't find it on the island. It's about a warlock and a vampire who solve crimes and have sexual tension." Because of course they did.

"That sounds like something that would air back home too," she admitted. "Maybe on MTV."

She was thinking of ~~not~~ Teen Wolf.

"...it's on the CW," Erasmus admitted. Which was close enough to MTV in these circumstances.

"Same thing," Erasmus had to agree. "Okay, if we get split up, we meet at the gay merman Christmas store."

What? Was that not a better and more significant landmark than Cafe Du Monde or the cathedral?
