So, uh, yes, I think he will be able to sense the multitude of souls in the artifact. Since he can't make out details from disembodied spirits, probably it would just seem like a murmuring horde to him. But he would know that there are a lot of souls in there. He wouldn't be able to do anything about it without also having access to any associated physical remains.
I actually have canonical precedent for the second question! No, he won't be able to sense the guy in her head, because he's in a living body. If he was more in the artifacts that would change the math.
